What Is Artistic Music Research?
Artistic Research in Music or Artistic Music Research is interested in the concrete individual processes of experience, decision-making and interpretation in performing, designing and creating, composing and arranging, communicating and making music and sounds.
Artistic research is an artistic process embedded in research contexts and their requirements, in which artists creatively deal with objects, situations and constellations and document, reflect and communicate this process and its result in a sensually perceptible form (such as recordings, performances) as well as spoken word and/or written text.
Artistic research as a practice is thereby non-linear, risky, with methods that can emerge and change over time. This experimental approach contrasts with the established understanding of research in musicology, for example, according to which the research process itself is relatively regimented by a certain predefined design of methods.
